Report: Business Ethernet to Boom by the Billions

It’s the fastest-growing wireline data network worldwide, and it’s only getting bigger, according to a new report published by Vertical Systems Group.

The Boston-based research house projected Ethernet business services will hit $40.2 billion by 2014. Additionally, double-digit annual growth of business Ethernet is projected during this time period for all regional markets throughout the world.

“Every major network provider is positioning Ethernet as a strategic business service, and deploying carrier Ethernet products to improve operations and reduce costs,” said Rosemary Cochran, principal at Vertical Systems Group, in a press release. “Worldwide enterprise demand for Ethernet services is real and heightening due to expanding accessibility, advances in standardization, and rollouts of domestic and global VPLS offerings.”

Detailed business Ethernet market analysis and in-depth statistics are available now through Vertical Systems Group’s Emerging Network Service Research program.

For enterprises who want more of the nuts-and-bolts on Ethernet-based technologies, Gaithersburg-based Patton (News - Alert) recently unveiled a “how-to” video to ease Ethernet extender implementation woes.

Patton’s online video tutorial – “Breaking Boundaries with Ethernet Extenders” – shows IT staff how to stretch Ethernet extensions from points A to B using standard two-wire copper cabling (and reach up to 5.7 miles, achieving rates up to 50 Mbps).

“Breaking boundaries is our legacy,” said Johnnie Grant, Patton’s product manager. “Since we created the Ethernet Extender, Patton innovation has been driving Ethernet reach and rate ever farther and faster.”

In addition to the online video, Patton highlighted related products in its latest newsletter – namely its CopperLink Model 2172, which is prepped to deal with such bandwidth-intensive applications as medical imaging, streaming music, Voice-over-IP and triple-play. In doing so, it reduces the cost complexity of required network infrastructure.

The Model 2172 delivers a full-duplex symmetrical or asymmetrical connection over common voice-grade copper at speeds up to 50 Mbps, eliminating the need for expensive fiber-optic or CAT5e cabling, Grant said.

“It goes way beyond speed,” Grant said. “You’ve got proven reliability, plug-and-play convenience… the whole package. Our line-rate selection makes it the most versatile Ethernet Extender out there. You can drop this box into any network environment and just watch it work.”
