Patton Ethernet Booster Extends PoE up to Five Times the Standard Reach

Patton (News - Alert) Electronics has continued to make moves in the global business and carrier-class network access, connectivity, VoIP and triple-play equipment market in recent years, and this week further extended its network extension with the CopperLink Model 2110 Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) Booster series.

This micro-sized booster is designed to transparently extend 100-Mbps Ethernet traffic along with IEEE (News - Alert) 802.3af PoE up to 656 feet, more than double the current standard.

The 2110 model, which Patton combines with multiple Ethernet Boosters installed in a "daisy chain", extends PoE up to 1640 feet, more than five times the standard reach, according to Johnnie Grant, product manager at Patton.

"Ethernet anywhere is what Patton is all about,” said Grant. “Patton has been breaking Ethernet distance barriers since the 1990's. Now, with the Model 2110, Patton's CopperLink technology has done it again. We're still bending the rules on where Ethernet devices can be deployed."

The Maryland-based company’s micro-sized device eliminates the need for UPS equipment for power injection or additional Ethernet switches for signal regeneration, and reduces infrastructure costs and streamlines network installation when deploying VoIP handsets, IP cameras, PoE Wireless Access Points (WAPs), and any other LAN device, according to Grant.

In addition, a chain of six 2110s, the Ethernet Booster which operates over CAT5 cabling and is not required at the end of the connection, can extend Ethernet up to 1968 feet.

"IP-enabled security cameras are useless if you can't see your target. Proper IP-camera placement is absolutely critical,” said Grant. “What if the right location is more than 100 meters from your Ethernet switch? What if it's not cost-effective or feasible to install UPS systems? The CopperLink Ethernet Booster solves two key challenges with one small device."

Providing 100-Mbps Ethernet Extension combined with PoE pass-through, the Model 2110 is transparent to WMV, MPEG-4, and MJPEG compression schemes and fully compatible with any standards-based PoE WAP, IP camera, or VoIP handset.

From March 3 to March 8, Patton will showcase the Model 2110, as well as Patton's other benchmark-setting CopperLink products at CeBIT (News - Alert), Hall 13, Booth A58.
