IDT Rolls Out Ethernet and IEEE 1588 Timing Devices for Smart Grid and Industrial Automation Applications

The Analog and Digital Company, Integrated Device Technology, Inc., has introduced Ethernet and IEEE (News - Alert) 1588 timing devices enhanced to meet the performance, functionality, and cost objectives of smart grid and industrial automation applications.


The company has released their 8V89316 and 8V89317 low-jitter Ethernet PLLs, which can be used to synchronize switches and routers via the Ethernet physical layer. These Ethernet PLLs promises to improve the reliability and time accuracy of IEEE 1588-based transparent clocks, boundary clocks, and ordinary clocks.

'IDT's latest Ethernet PLLs lead the market with the combination of performance, features, and cost-effectiveness - facilitating the use of Ethernet physical layer clocks in smart-grid and industrial applications,' said Louise Gaulin, vice president and general manager of the Network Communications Division at IDT.

The 8V89316 produces clocks suitable for QSGMII (Quad Serial Gigabit Media Independent Interface) and 1 GbE interfaces, while the ultra-low-jitter 8V89317 is appropriate for 10 GbE interfaces and adds the ability to lock to 1 PPS (pulse per second) GPS clocks. Both the devices inherit DCOs for amplified flexibility, while offering best-in-class performance.

The 8V89317 has the capacity to lock to a 1PPS frequency reference from a GPS receiver, allowing use as part of a local network master clock without the need for wire- or fiber-based access to a synchronization source. With this, the GPS timing improves suppleness of the physical location of a clock and reduces installation costs for 'timing islands' by removing the need to extend a timing network to every location.

Users can expect phase jitter below 650 femtoseconds RMS over the 10 kHz to 20 MHz integration range, from the new 8V89316, whereas the new 8V89317 phase jitter is below 300 femtoseconds RMS over the 10 kHz to 20 MHz integration range.

The company is currently offering IDT 8V89316 and 8V89317 to qualified customers for sampling, which are put in a 196-ball 15 x 15 mm CABGA package. The IDT 8V89316 and 8V89317 are priced at $9.46 and $18.30 each for volumes of 1,000 units, respectively.
