RCN Business, a provider of high-speed Internet, voice, video and network solutions, achieved the Metro Ethernet Forum’s (MEF (News - Alert)) rigorous Carrier Ethernet 2.0 (CE 2.0) certification.  The carrier is recognized for critical Ethernet service delivery that ensures the highest class of service for business.

For Service Providers: CE 2.0 is set of MEF CE 2.0 Certified network elements that connect to transport Carrier Ethernet services for all users. Carrier Ethernet services are carried over physical Ethernet networks and other legacy transport technologies.

“To date, only nine U.S. carriers have achieved CE 2.0 certification, with many not expected to finalize and achieve certification until 2015,” said Robert Roeder, EVP and chief development officer for RCN (News - Alert) Business, in a statement.

Roeder said that the company’s focus is to provide the most reliable and standards-compliant solution to meet the complex networking needs of business customers.  RCN delivers the credibility and assurance that define CE 2.0.

“The MEF views the Carrier Ethernet 2.0 certification program as opening a very important chapter in the evolution of standardized Carrier Ethernet services,” said Eric Puetz, MEF certification committee co-chair & director.

Puetz said that CE 2.0 certification provides an essential proof point for CE 2.0 services, opening up new markets for regional providers, delivery of cloud services, the first application-oriented SLAs and optimization of mobile backhaul.

A communications industry alliance consisting of more than 220 member organizations, the MEF is the defining body for Carrier Ethernet and the driving force behind the global market for Carrier Ethernet services & technologies.

In March, MEF reported that in just 12 months after the announcement of the first CE 2.0 Certified Service Provider, there are now 21 CE 2.0 Providers with 87 CE 2.0 Services in 10 countries. CE 2.0 certifications for service providers grew at double the rate of CE 1.0 certifications in an equivalent period of time, and the number of services certified in 4Q 2013 equaled the total for all the services certified in the first three quarters of 2013
