ZTE Launches New VDSL VoIP Gateway

By Peter Bernstein

Delivering the highest quality user experience really is all about having broadband connectivity end-to-end. And, when it comes to the residential market it can be the last few feet connections that make the difference, particularly as we move to the need for all of our devices to have wireless connections that provide high quality voice and video.

Products based on the new 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard are designed to meet the needs of a demanding market for quality wireless experiences, and ZTE (News - Alert) Corporation is an early market entrant with its new ZXHN H368A, a VDSL VoIP gateway which supports 802.11ac. The good news for home users is that the incorporation of support for the 2.4GHz (gigahertz) and 5GHz bands, means the product can enable wireless home networks to deliver bandwidth-hungry high-definition video services at Gbps (gigabits per second) speeds. It also means that VoIP quality will be remarkably good, just in time for facilitating the introduction of WebRTC capabilities that will allow for VoIP calling directly from a browser, and enrich a host of real-time services. As noted, the ZXHN H368A supports dual-band concurrent Wi-Fi.   Total rates at the physical layer reach ran impressive 1.6Gbps, thanks to its ability to operate on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

·         In the 5GHz band, the gateway supports 802.11ac MIMO3x3, delivering speeds of up to 1.3Gbps at the physical layer and enabling operators to provide video services such as IPTV (News - Alert).

·         In the 2.4GHz band, the product supports 802.11n MIMO2x2, with its physical-layer rate of 300Mbps (megabits per seconds) allowing user terminals to access the internet.

·         In the absence of a dual-band user terminal, the 2.4GHz band affords better compatibility with devices not supporting the 5Ghz band.

There is a lot of talk in the industry about the growth and potential of the “two-screen” market where we watch TV and increasingly interact with its content on our personal devices simultaneously. The goal is for all of those interactions to be compelling, as operators seek to keep us happy so we keep all of that traffic on their networks. The last link is critical for doing this and 802.11ac is a significant improvement, and hence can enable service providers to offer true differentiated value. As the rollout of products based on the standard continue, watching adoption rates is going to be something of intense interest.
