Cyan SDN to Provide Metro Communications with Ethernet Services and Wireless Backhaul

TMCnet Contributing Writer

Telecom companies and MSO’s (Multiple Service Operator’s) are facing capacity issues because of broadband usage with applications that use rich media such as video, high-end images and sound recordings. Providing these types of services with the latest technology and without an increase in service costs requires collaboration with a company that can meet the needs of the organization with scalable growth. By choosing Cyan SDN, Metro Communications is looking forward to provide a set of tools it needs to provide services for metropolitan and rural market across a 25,000 square mile service location in Illinois.

Currently, Metro Communications is going through a 700 mile fiber implementation in Central Illinois. This upgrade will give the company the ability to provide multiple services for mobile operators, public and private organizations in the area. When the project is finished in early 2014, it will serve more than 200 buildings with high performance wavelength and Ethernet services. It will use many of the solutions to give its customers an affordable solution to the increasing network and content challenges they face.

"This important network expansion helps us grow beyond our voice termination roots and deliver higher value, transport and IP services to our customers. We are delivering wireless backhaul solutions, as well as Ethernet and SONET services to a number of underserved areas in Central Illinois. Cyan makes the expansion easy -- providing the software, equipment, and services needed to make this a seamless transformation,” said, Zak Horn, president with Metro Communications.

Using the Cyan Z-Series platform will give Metro up to 2.8 Tbps of switch capacity with compact infrastructures that can be deployed at tower locations. By combining the Blue Planet SDN software, it will give Metro more control over its network so it can provide better services as well as keep track of its overall operations. The software has performance verification and billing applications from Cyan and third-party apps that keep track of configuration, management and planning. Cyan will operate the entire Metro Communications network with its personnel using the CyNOC service, giving it immediate 24/7 service availability. This eliminates the need to train personnel at Metro, saving the company additional costs.

"Metro Communications' deployment of Cyan exemplifies the importance of combining software, hardware, and services in an integrated package. It gives them a much more cost effective solution while still allowing them to mix and match third party elements. And with Cyan PRO, it allows them to begin realizing the cost benefits immediately,” said Jeff Parow, Cyan vice president of sales for the Eastern U.S.

In related VoIP news, Patton (News - Alert) (News - Alert) Electronics recently revealed its all-new customer service support system, including its new platinum-level Premium Support and platinum-plus Premium 24/7 Support services, which take the company’s already unparalleled gold-standard free support to an unbelievable new level. Already offering free lifetime technical support is rare in itself, but by working with Patton-Inalp (Switzerland), Patton Electronics (USA) is extending its lifetime technical support with global 24x7 coverage – something that is even rarer in the electronic-telecommunications industry.
