Migrating from Serial to Ethernet/IP with Patton Solutions

TMCnet Web Editor

Implementing the right technological solutions is central to serial device networking in industrial automation. Even older industrial networks devices (ie. PLCs, RTUs, and IEDs) that communicate over serial connections such as RS-232, 422 and 485 remain indispensable for a number of critical business operations. It’s crucial to leverage the benefits of enabling these legacy applications for communication over Ethernet/IP, but it may be a daunting thought concerning how and where to start. Sometimes, it’s just as important – if not, more – to cover the how’s and why’s or serial-to-IP migration for industrial automation today.

While such devices are still very valuable and useful, they become stunted due to their incompatibility for communication over Ethernet/IP. One company, Patton (News - Alert) Electronics, has been working to develop solutions for serial device networking in industrial automation for over almost 30 years. By leveraging Patton’s trusted and robust solutions, you will find that retaining functionality of serial devices in a highly IP environment will be simple and easy.

Learning how to capitalize on the migration from Serial to IP can only prove advantageous, as Internet Protocol (IP) serves as the principal communications protocol in today’s age.

"Ethernet/IP is the future of industrial networking," said Johnnie Grant, product line manager at Patton. "Sooner or later, any existing RS-232 device will require an IP network connection. Patton's latest technological innovation makes selecting the right equipment for next-generation device networks a no-brainer."

Speaking about no-brainers, the company will be soon hosting a related webinar called “Migrating Serial to Ethernet/IP for Device Communications,” where attendants will learn the chief benefits of migrating from Serial to IP, explore key, real-world scenarios of IP-enabled device networks, understand the equipment necessary for enabling serial devices for Ethernet, and ultimately learn how Patton’s solutions for migration to Ethernet/IP can transform their current device communications.

Scheduled for September 18 from 2:00-3:00PM ET, where important members of the Patton team will present on all of the above.

Patton will be exhibiting at the ITEXPO West 2012 at booth #1014. To be held Oct. 2-5 at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, TX, ITEXPO (News - Alert) offers an educational program to help corporate decision makers select the right IP-based voice, video, fax and unified communications solutions to improve their operations.
