Westell Launches New Series of Ethernet Switches

Provider of telecommunications equipment for wireline, wireless and home networks, Westell Technologies (News - Alert) has added a new series of Ethernet switches to the eSmartES product line.

The company offers a line of temperature-hardened Ethernet switches designed especially for “edge” applications on the perimeter of the network where industrial devices are connected. The newest ES7000 series of managed Ethernet switches are “extremely flexible with configurations from 12 to 28 ports,” said company officials.

“The ES7000 series expands the range of applications that can be cost-effectively addressed with Westell’s industrial Ethernet switches,” said, Chris Shaver, senior vice president and general manager at Westell Technologies.

The company’s newest offering comes with Westell’s SiteVu Secure telemetry feature, Power over Ethernet (PoE) and PoE+, and four gigabit ports that are UTP/SFP combinations.

“As with our other Ethernet products for the utility and industrial marketplace, these switches incorporate lessons from three decades of developing telco-grade products for harsh outdoor environments,” Shaver said.

As the ES7028G model is modular and field upgradable, users can easily add expansion slots to the 12-port base unit, resulting in a switch with options for 12, 14, 16, 20, 22 or 28 ports. Moreover if the applications require 12 ports or less, the ES7012 model provides all the same features and functionality as the ES7028G model but in a compact form that is suitable for backboard, DIN-rail or wall mounting, said company officials.

Company officials said that the ES7000 series of Ethernet switches are ideal for connecting edge devices such as SCADA telemetry radios, programmable logic controllers, and cameras with upstream switches or routers.

In recent related news, Patton (News - Alert), a provider of award-winning Ethernet Extenders, revealed its latest innovation in Ethernet Extender technology - its CL1314 - which leverages strong, reliable and ever-present copper-wire network infrastructure to interconnect remote LANs up to 3.4 miles apart when operating over standard .5 mm voice-grade wiring. Delivering high speeds of up to 5.7 Mbps, Patton’s enhanced CL1314 Ethernet Extender proves a simple, cost-effective solution for high-speed campus LAN extension.
