UK-based Patapsco Communications has been acquired by Communications Systems (News - Alert) (CSI) for its Transition Networks business unit, significantly bolstering Transition’s position as a top manufacturer of broadband hardware solutions.

Pseudowire (also known as TDM over IP or Circuit Emulation Services) is added to Transition’s portfolio and capabilities with the Patapsco acquisition. Transition’s portfolio and capabilities will also include a variety of ISDN products like ISDNoIP. The transportation of TDM traffic over IP and Ethernet packet networks will be now enabled with Patapsco’s wide range of technology, built upon a 20-year reputation for quality and customer support. The company also has a focus on delivering solutions for difficult technical challenges. These include highly-accurate clocking and synchronization which are necessary for applications like mobile backhaul delivery via packet networks. Challenging migration issues from legacy systems to Next Generation Networks (News - Alert) are addressed by Patapsco’s other established products.

In a release, William G. Schultz, President and CEO of CSI, said, "Patapsco's product line is a strategic addition for Transition Networks (News - Alert) in expanding its product offering to the service provider market. Patapsco has a strong line of existing products that we can immediately leverage in Transition Networks' customer and distribution network around the world."

Schultz added that CSI (News - Alert) will be able to bring new products to market with the combined engineering efforts of Patapsco and Transition. Core technologies from both companies will be utilized by these products.

New and innovative architectures will be offered by the company with the addition of Patapsco's technology to Transition's portfolio. Transition's established portfolio of robust Carrier Ethernet products will be paired with Patapsco's technology, allowing for a wider portfolio of flexible, cost-effective and unique solutions for customers to be offered.
