The functionality of SIP registrar is now available in Patton’s (News - Alert) SmartNode VoIP gateway-routers and customer-premise equipment (CPE), according to a company announcement.

 

SmartNode is able to solve the interoperability issues usually associated with SIP-based enterprise VoIP systems--especially when adding an IP-PBX (News - Alert) or SIP phones. SIP registrar is now being offered as a licensed feature in the new SmartWare release. This has been accomplished by building on a rich set of routing, calling and survivability features.

 

“Interoperability is what drives carriers and integrators to Patton,” said Patton president Ramon Felder, who went on to explain that SmartNode interoperates with all players.

 

By permitting software-based phones and PBXs to directly register with the SmartNode—as opposed to a SIP server or softswitch--SIP registrar features several advantages.

 

One of them is obviously system interoperability. The SmartNode SIP registrar, along with back-to-back user agent and inter-protocol transcoding, can ensure the compatibility of all VoIP system elements. Additionally, network administrators and enterprise integrators can install, configure and operate VoIP systems with less costs and hassles.

 

SmartNode also boasts a strong level of system survivability, providing dial back-up and IP link redundancy through breakout connections to the local PSTN. Inter-office VoIP calls can travel via the PSTN because IP-PBX and SIP-phones are registered in each branch-office. This lets SmartNode users talk to each other even if the network fails.

 

And finally, SmartNode boasts low-cost entry and no-cost growth. SIP registrar gets rid of the expense of a SIP server for basic small-enterprise VoIP systems.
