Ethernet Extender Users Are Frustrated with New Virgin Media, SuperHub

Virgin Media’s (News - Alert) 100mb SuperHub receives an update that approves speed, the company proclaimed it as a much needed update.

The SuperHub, is manufactured by Ethernet extender company Netgear (News - Alert), “was created with hopes of achieving speeds higher than that of its predecessor,” the site says, adding that all is not peaches and cream: “However, the new Super Hub, which boasts speeds up to 100Mbits/sec, is the object of frustration for many of its owners.”

What seems to be the issue? The way the site explains it, after upgrading to the new Super Hub, “customers complained the router slowed their connection speeds to nearly a crawl. Customers on the Virgin Media forums have complained for over a week about the modem. Customer kmb786 complained, saying that ‘Ever since I got mine upgraded from 10Mbits/sec to 50Mbits/sec, the connection has been terrible -- disconnects every day and sometimes several times a day’.”

Recently, TMC (News - Alert) had the news that Virgin Media, who are UK's leading broadband provider, announced the launch of a new 30Mb broadband service, due to replace the existing 20Mb service from February 1st.

Unlike other fiber optic broadband services based on VDSL technology, such as BT (News - Alert) Infinity, Virgin Media officials said at the time, “customers can expect to receive speeds close to the stated headline 30Mb speed1, and aren't subject to the ‘speed lottery’ that plagues broadband delivered over telephone wires.”

Virgin Media officials hope the problem should be taken care of by adding a simple patch. A spokesperson for the company assured customers that “the problem rests in the configuration and not the actual hardware.”

In the same report, Virgin Media phrased the issue in terms of “some issues some customers have been seeing with data throughput when using our new Super Hub modem/router. Testing is underway, and we expect to resolve the issue by a firmware update.”
