Dell has announced that it is entering the field of unified communications with its Unified Communications (News - Alert) Command Suite.

The suite is designed to help enterprise customers better manage their UC infrastructure. It includes analytics for Microsoft (News - Alert) Exchange and Lync, making reporting easier and letting IT and management get a better picture of the true cost of ownership of their UC systems. With the analytics, IT people can see exactly who’s adopting UC within an organization as well as encourage adoption and make migration easier.

It also includes diagnostics to fix problems when they occur. The diagnostics also encourage migration by assuring workers that the inevitable bugs when transitioning will be ironed out.

“IT is no longer the only part of the organization that needs more data and better analytics on their unified communications platforms,” said Curtis Johnstone, senior unified communications product architect for Dell (News - Alert) Software. “Business leaders require this insight to improve decision making and business outcomes and expect their UC investments to provide better tracking of customer engagements, service level agreements, marketing and sales initiatives, and much more. Dell’s new UC Command Suite with cross-platform analytics and diagnostics delivers the answers the business needs to ensure they are getting the best value from their Microsoft UC solutions by offerings valuable and actionable insights into the workforce activity.”

While UC solutions like Lync are becoming more popular, relatively few IT people have as deep a wealth of experience as Lync MVP Johnstone.

Providing cloud-based software seems like a surprising move for a company most people think of as the “McDonald’s of PCs.”

Dell has been more focused on the business market since going private, but it’s really the company coming full circle. In the early days, Dell focused on selling more to businesses rather than consumers, and it’s going back to its roots as the PC market cools in favor of tablets and smartphones.
