Enterprise communications and its impact on the market is an interesting study. You not only have companies that need to invest in their communications systems, you also have customers who want to see companies leveraging the latest innovations to stay connected. With this scenario going on, it’s common for enterprise communications opportunities to continue to grow.

A recent study by Infonetics (News - Alert) Research, titled “The Technology Report May 2014,” offers a glimpse into the market, examining trends, what’s new, marketing insights and more. For the industry overall, revenue for IP PBX (News - Alert) large deployments is down 1.6 percent, even though lines are up by 8.9 percent. For small IP PBX deployments, the drop hit 14.4 percent. However, telephony for the enterprise grew 4 percent overall, with enterprise voice application revenues producing a 7 percent increase.

One area of growth seen throughout the market is in video conferencing and telepresence. According to the report, the equipment market in this space is up 5 percent.

“Demand for video capabilities is at an all-time high, but businesses’ willingness to spend isn’t, causing a shift from high-end telepresence suites and multipurpose room systems to lower-cost software and videophones for personal videoconferencing,” explained Matthias Machowinski, directing analyst for enterprise networks and video at Infonetics Research (News - Alert), in a statement. “This, along with lower selling prices due to competition, is hampering a more robust recovery in the videoconferencing market.”

The report also identified specific trends in enterprise communications, pointing to the growth in VoIP and unified communications services. As this trend continues, Infonetics anticipates that this market will hit $88 billion by 2018. VoIP services overall have far surpassed infancy status and are now readily considered mainstream. As such, demand continues to grow and vendors continue to improve their offerings.

Highlights for the market overall include an 8 percent growth in 2013 to reach $68 billion. SIP trunking also got lots of attention, increasing 50 percent from the prior year, with activity in North America dominating. EMEA is expected to be a strong contributor to this space in 2014. To that end, hosted PBX and unified communications services increased 13 percent in 2013 and seats great 35 percent. With the adoption of IP PBXs, managed services are benefitting and roughly 10-20 percent of new IP PBX lines sold are part of a managed service our outsourced contract.

For enterprise communications overall, this growth means newer technologies for companies, better support for users and greater communications experiences for all. It will also set a standard for what people want to hear when they pick up the phone.
