Report: Enterprise VoIP Gaining Acceptance

By Stefania Viscusi, Assignment Desk Editor

In today’s workplace, the use of technology has grown drastically along with the introduction of new technologies that make communications easier and increase productivity.

The use of VoIP phone systems to reduce communications costs and improve collaborative capabilities in the workplace is just one technology highlighted in a recent Frost & Sullivan research report sponsored by Verizon (News - Alert) and Cisco.

The report, "Meetings Around the World II: Charting the Course of Advanced Collaboration," specifically uncovered that technologies like VoIP have helped to change the way employees are working and are driving improved results for businesses.

According to Blair Crump, Verizon Business (News - Alert) group president of worldwide sales, "While professionals overwhelmingly reported the benefits of deploying advanced IP-enabled collaboration tools for their competitive advantage, the study also uncovered interesting developments related to work life today.”

This included using technology to work from home and create a better work-life balance.

The study also measured the impact collaboration technology usage had on business performance and emerging technology adoption trends.

When it came to VoIP, the study found the technology was “leading the way for delivery of advanced communications and collaboration applications.”

Even those IT managers who once looked away from VoIP for quality concerns noted that the quality of VoIP is as good, or better, than wireline phone systems.

Carlos Dominguez, senior vice president with the office of chairman and CEO, Cisco (News - Alert), also noted that adoption rates in different geographic locations and cultures must also be considered.

“There remain cultural differences that must be taken into account to make the most of our business interactions on a country-to-country and region-to-regional basis," Dominguez said. "Just as no two countries are alike, no two collaborators are alike, and we see this diversity driving innovation going forward."

Of the study’s findings, Chinese organizations were found to embrace UC&C technologies the most, with 89 percent using some form of VoIP as their primary phone service.
