VegaStream is rolling the proverbial dice and taking a bold step forward to enter today’s Central and Latin American markets with VoIP gateway solutions.

 

The UK-based VoIP gateway manufacturer plans to team with regional value-added distributors and ecosystem partners to bring its VoIP solutions to Central and Latin America. VegaStream enters the market with several channel partners already in place, including: Commlogik Corp. and Telectro.

 

“Our entry into Central, South and Latin America is a key step in leveraging the growing demand for VoIP services and equipment in the region,” said Denis Letsinger, vice president of sales, Central and Latin America.

 

VegaStream’s global endeavors have also taken them to the Great White North. The company recently announced that ThinkTel Communications, a Canadian-based provider of telephony-based applications to the residential, business and CLEC markets, will deploy the complete line of VegaStream VoIP gateways in order to offer seamless VoIP services to its business partners and customers.

 

But entry into Central and Latin American markets could prove considerably more challenging. As reported in silicon.com last year, Central and Latin American governments are extremely protective of phone company monopolies. For example, broadband customers in Panama pay a 12 per cent tax on calls made using VoIP. The government fines Internet cafes between $10,000 and $50,000 for letting customers make Net phone calls. And Colombia practically outlawed VoIP in the late 1990s, as reported in silicon.com.
