Enterprise SBC: AudioCodes' Percy Discusses Importance of SIP Interoperability Advancements
By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor
The border controller is a new set of functionality for their media gateways and multiservice business gateways, he said, which allows companies to connect their SIP-based infrastructure, their IP-PBX (News - Alert) or contact center, and lets them use it with SIP-based services outside of their business.
It provides all-important interoperability, Percy said. “They want to be compatible with a number of different service providers, or SIP trunking providers, so they want to have choice, so the interoperability gives them that ability to make some choices. And also with their applications, gives them the ability to use many different applications, it resolves issues with interoperability and SIP, such as fax and other issues.”
A border controller also provides security, Percy said. “What it does then is protect the business against potential attack, that might come from the Internet or outside the Wide-Area Network.”
The third thing the product brings is “survivability,” he said. “And that’s the union between the ESBC and the gateway.”
In a recent podcast, Percy said, “In the past, software applications had been using legacy PCI (News - Alert) form factor boards for the conversion between the TDM world and the software application.”
He added that, “Those boards required specialized servers that had the appropriate sized slots in them, and because they needed those PCI slots it limited the physical configuration or installation that you could use to deploy a fax as an application.”
