The digital revolution is in full swing. Increasing mobility is increasing the role of information and communications technology. Ericsson (News - Alert) is a Swedish provider of communications technology and services, and the company was recently named as the global number one for patents within digital communications by European Patent Office for 2013.
“Never before have patent applications to the European Patent Organization (EPO) been as many as in 2013. The number of Swedish patent applications increased to 5,004 – up by 7.5 percent compared to 2012. (4,642 applications),” noted an official.

Ericsson is indicated to be with the most patent filings. The company has climbed from last year's 2nd place within Digital Communications and is now number one in that category – ahead of competitors Huawei, Qualcomm, Alcatel Lucent, Samsung, Nokia, ZTE (News - Alert), NEC, and LG.
Recently, the telecom equipment vendor announced a new unified network management system designed to deliver high-performing networks that also adapt to changes both in the real and virtual world. Ericsson Network Manager is offered as part of Ericsson's full OSS portfolio for multi-vendor management and is designed to address the network needs of tomorrow, according to the company.
Also, in a recent study, Ericsson suggested that, by 2020, there will be 50 billion connected devices in play and the company is said to plan a lot of strategic decisions towards this which will help it to tackle the demands coming in the next five to ten years.
