Compuware (News - Alert), a technology performance company, has published the results of a survey on the impact of new technologies and trends on the mainframe application environment.
“The survey results paint a picture of what IT departments have to cope with on a day-to-day basis,” said Kris Manery, senior vice president and general manager of mainframe solutions at Compuware. “The findings showed that more than half of customer-facing and business-critical applications are dependent on the mainframe.”
According to the survey findings, mobile technology is instrumental in increasing the complexity, usage and costs of mainframe applications, which is making it prohibitive for companies to isolate and fix problems.
About 90 percent of CIOs said that outdated transaction monitoring practices were still in place, which did not offer enough visibility into how distributed and mainframe applications interact. Also, IT staffers are wasting time in dealing with complex application issues that they can’t judge, resulting in a loss of time, money and reputation.
The survey found that developers who were not familiar with mainframe environments were not optimizing code, resulting in more computer power being used to deliver applications or an increase in MIPS (million instructions per second) consumption.
About 91 percent of CIOs who took part in survey said that because new customer-facing applications were accessing the mainframe, performance expectations also increased. This leads to concerns of loss. To prevent loss of brand reputation, revenue and productivity, IT teams are forced to develop high-performing applications.
Since most companies still employ silo-focused methods to monitor performance, they are not able to proactively detect problems. With an increase in complexity of applications, it becomes difficult to detect such issues, making it increasingly difficult to find and isolate the cause of the issues. This makes problem resolution slower.
The survey explains similar complexities and their effects or impacts on business outcomes. As the enterprise application environment is integrated, management should also be integrated. If IT focuses on solving problems too much, then unreasonable delays in projects will be the result. A proactive approach to problem solving will help drive business, as users are not affected and businesses can indulge in revenue-generating activities, said Compuware analysts.
Compuware also announced the top three mobile performance trends during this holiday shopping season. This is based on its analysis of the mobile performance of top U.S. retailers between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday (News - Alert) 2013. These trends reveal the critical importance of mobile performance during the holiday shopping season and the impact it can have on the business.
