New Video Explains FoIP and Why Right Fax Lead the Pack

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Contributor

The move from traditional phone systems to voice-over-IP (VoIP), its use on SIP-based private branch exchange systems (IP-PBX (News - Alert)) and unified communications software is expected to grow from 1.6 million SIP trunks to 22.3 million by 2015, according to a recent article. Where does that leave fax services?

If voice services can move to an IP-based model, so can fax – according to The Fax Guys, a fax automation services company. The company claims that Right Fax is the best solution to help faxes integrate with the new IP-based world.

Faxing is not dead, but it does need to keep up with the IP-based world.

“Faxing is a time-tested, reliable form of transporting documents,” The Fax Guys said in a video. “Faxes provide us with secure document transmission, proof of delivery, and are universally accepted by courts and business.”

Right Fax and its use of fax-over-IP (FoIP) bring faxes to the IP party by connecting with the same network that utilizes VoIP. It uses the T.38 FoIP protocol to transport the fax data across the network.

“Users would compose their faxes from a PC, and the fax would be sent to the Right Fax server,” The Fax Guys explained in the video. Normally, Right Fax server will then establish a telephony call using the Dialogic Brooktrout (News - Alert) (News - Alert) board with the recipient fax device.

Using the T.30 fax protocol, the fax audio is then transported across the PSTN to the recipient fax device.

“However, since the Right Fax is no longer connected to the PSTN, it uses the server’s Ethernet port to establish a SIP or H.323 phone session to the IP Media Gateway (News - Alert),” company officials said.

The Right Fax server then uses Dialogic (News - Alert) SR 140 software to encode the T.30 fax audio into T.38 TCP/IP packets to the IP Media Gateway that is usually connected to the PSTN via an analog or digital connection, and the Gateway (News   - Alert) decodes the T.38 the TCP/IP data back into T.30 fax audio in real time.

Right Fax has a leg up with FoIP, The Fax Guys explained, because it includes native support for unified messaging and communications solutions from Cisco (News - Alert) and Microsoft (News   - Alert). It also simplifies integrations with SIP trunk providers for ease of deployment.

The service also has “unparalleled fax-over-IP integration and scalability,” the company noted, meaning that it “can grow with your voice-over-IP infrastructure as it changes and new equipment is added.”

Further, Right Fax does “extensive testing and document integrations with industry-leading gateway vendors,” The Fax Guys highlighted in the video. “Right Fax is the number-one and fasting growing provider of fax-over-IP solutions.” It leads the pack because it takes “the most reliable and robust fax server ever and combining it with the industry-leading Dialogic (News - Alert) SR 140 software.”
