Commetrex CEO: The Introduction to Smart FoIP

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The Fax over IP market is a booming industry, simply because so many companies have made the move to all IP environments and need to integrate their fax capabilities into the network. TMCnet recently interviewed Michael Coffee, CEO of Commetrex (News - Alert) to understand how the company is moving in this space. The interview was captured in this video.

Commetrex promotes the concept of Smart FoIP, a new technology the company developed to address the signaling and the call setup of T.38 sessions in IP networks. The company did comprehensive tests with broadcast FoIP solutions to determine how best to improve the process and make it “smart.”

Coffee stressed that in phase one of FoIP evolution, companies were implementing FoIP in the IP enterprise and enjoying a seamless experience. Once carriers started introducing T.38 fax support and SIP trunking, problems were introduced in the network as the media path is short and direct, while the signaling path can be long and complicated. Smart FoIP solves this problem and Commetrex is seeking partnerships with carriers interested in implementing Smart FoIP.

The company is also now expanding voice in its solutions. The BladeWare line is a comprehensive telephony platform, and Coffee shared that it was easy to add voice support. BladeWare products are now shifting to support the voice demands of customers in the market.

Commetrex has often claimed that they have the broadest selection in the market for FoIP solutions. According to Coffee, the company initially started in the market by licensing fax technologies, then invented terminating T.38 and now licenses that technology to carriers. The company also completed development of the BladeWare platform and then gained the ability to address the enterprise FoIP market, offering support for both TDM and FoIP.

Commetrex dropped development of fax boards a few years ago in favor of Sangoma Technologies (News - Alert) integration. Now, Commetrex offers OEMS for every single interface to address the entire market –supporting the claim that they have the broadest selection in the market for FoIP solutions.

When asked about G711 pass-through fax, Coffee said, “In some applications, this works beautifully. It is all IP, and faxes are received with typically no errors.” He stressed that Commetrex provides support for users in this space.

As for the ITEXPO (News - Alert) East 2011, Coffee shared: “It looks like it is going to be one of the best shows ever.”

To find out more about Commetrex, visit the company at ITEXPO East 2011. To be held Feb. 2-4 in Miami, ITEXPO is the world’s premier IP communications event. Visit Commetrex in booth #528. Don’t wait. Register now.
