Protecting Email Servers with Ipswitch's IMail Anti-Virus Software

By Amy Tierney, TMCnet Web Editor

There’s a lot businesses can accomplish with email today. The communications tool plays a dominant role in how organizations stay in touch and achieve certain tasks. But as computer viruses are plentiful and new attacks launch nearly every day, companies must be protected. As part of its ongoing series, TMCnet is exploring how Ipswitch, a Lexington, Mass.-based software company, addresses businesses’ various email server needs with its email archiving, protection and instant messaging services. Last month, we highlighted Ipswitch’s (News - Alert) Instant Messaging Service.

With email reigning as one of the top forms of business communication today, smart companies know how important it is to protect their data and business networks. And as the number of email users increase, so do the number of hackers and the possibility of attacks.

But small- and medium-sized businesses, as well as enterprises, can take steps to protect their email servers with top of the line security software from Ipswitch, a Lexington, Mass.-based developer of business-class messaging applications, and its IMail Server anti-virus software. The IMail Anti-Virus powered by BitDefender service offers a high-speed, multi-thread architecture and low memory consumption. In addition, it detects viruses and their variations without users prompting the service, with automatic checks for product and virus definition updates.

What’s more, virus definitions are updated weekly and also when a major virus is present, company officials said.

Offering a “set it and forget it' mindset, IMail Anti-Virus powered by BitDefender protects inbound and outbound email that doesn’t slow down company servers. End-users are protected from email-borne viruses, even if they don’t have current anti-virus software on their machines, Ipswitch said.

All email traffic, whether ingoing or outgoing, is scanned before it’s delivered. And the solution requires little to no administration.

“By eliminating viruses before they leave your server, you protect those you do business with and prevent unnecessary problems such as blacklisting,” according to the company’s Web site.
