Ipswitch Eases E-mail Server Security Threats with IMail Server

By Amy Tierney, TMCnet Web Editor

As more and more companies and consumers use e-mail as their preferred form of communications, the number of hackers and the prevalence of attacks increase, as well. And an e-mail server is particularly appealing targets of attackers

For example, a short-lived e-mail phishing scam swept across the Internet that posed a major risk to e-mail users. According to USA Today, an e-mail message that claimed to come from the IRS began inundating e-mail systems across the nation. It asked recipients to download a government form to resolve a question about under-reported income.

But the download gave control of the computer to the attacker, who immediately began using it to send copies of the viral message to all of the recipient's contacts, the newspaper reported.

The increasing number of virus-infected and other malicious software has fueled the need for improved protection on business networks. Organizations have a number of options to protect themselves from spam and malware by using software solutions, appliances or managed services. But what many companies need is security at the server level.

Officials from Ipswitch Inc., a Lexington, Mass.-based developer of business-class messaging applications, said it has the solution with IMail Server. The company said its IMail Anti-Virus powered by BitDefender, integrates content filtering that inspects incoming, outgoing and internal e-mail communications to keep companies’ assets protected.

“Through strategic partnerships, we provide anti-spam and anti-virus solutions to provide bulletproof protection for the investment you made in your messaging server,” Brad Senter, marketing manager of the messaging division for Ipswitch (News - Alert), told TMCnet in an interview. “Our anti-virus partnerships deploy proactive layers of defense provided by BitDefender or Symantec (News - Alert).”

IMail Anti-Virus provided by BitDefender updates virus definitions weekly and when a major outbreak occurs.IMail Anti-Virus powered by Symantec takes protection further by including spyware and adware scanning, administrator alerts, and uninterrupted definition updates, Senter said.

Ipswitch’s most recent product release, IMail Server Premium Security Bundle, incorporates carrier-grade anti-virus protection and adds the power of premium anti-spam protection provided by Commtouch (News - Alert), which keeps your IMail Server protected with industry leading EDGE technology. According to Senter, Commtouch's advanced detection blocks more than 98 percent of spam, phishing, and malware attacks before it ever touches your IMail Server.

“Commtouch’s edge protection efficiently stops the majority of unwanted emails from ever entering your network, saving on both bandwidth and infrastructure costs,” Senter said. “By accessing real-time IP reputation data provided by Commtouch's GlobalView Mail Reputation service, IMail Server Premium can block malicious senders during the SMTP transaction, before any data has been sent.”

Ipswitch is offering a free, 30-day evaluation on its Web site. Visitors can also check out a free demo of IMail Server.
