Redsky Launches WiFi E911 Solution for Enterprise WiFi Networks

By Erin Monda, TMCnet Contributor

RedSky (News - Alert), a provider of E911 software solutions to the enterprise market, provides a full suite of software solutions, hosted services and professional services to help large and small organizations of all types capture, manage and deliver the detailed location information necessary to provide effective 9-1-1 emergency response and other location-based services. And now it has an exciting new product that will bring E911 capabilities to enterprise WiFi (News - Alert) networks: the WiFi E911 solution.

The newly-released WiFi E911 leverages APIs on the WiFi location controller to monitor real-time phone movement from one access point to another. When a phone moves, the WiFi E911 updates its local database and the call server with the phone’s newest location and emergency location identification number (ELIN). If a WiFi phone dials 9-1-1, the dispatcher on the other end of the line receives the caller’s location pin-pointed by the related access point.

Enterprises utilizing the WiFi E911 can program the software to update Regional ALI databases maintained by local exchange carriers. They can also send location data to cloud-based 9-1-1 call routing services such as RedSky’s E911 Anywhere Network Services.

Both options provide integral, real-time location information in the event of a 9-1-1 emergency. And any developments to improve the efficiency of E911 are good for us all – especially when our children or other loved ones may need it.

Organizations interested in deploying WiFi need to take steps to ensure their mobile users are protected in the event of a 9-1-1 emergency. The increased mobility made possible by enterprise VoWiFi carries significant implications to workplace safety. Determining the specific location of a nomadic caller should they dial 9-1-1 from a WiFi phone can be especially challenging. Beyond the safety implications, failure to provide E911 protection to users on WiFi networks raises legal and liability issues -- especially in states with E911 regulations.

This WiFi E911’s release by RedSky is just another example of the company’s goal to more effectively bring this technology to schools that want it.
