Smart911 Reaches Over One Million Citizens in Tennessee

By Steve Anderson, Contributing TMCnet Writer

Smart911, a national safety database created by Rave Mobile Safety, has recently celebrated something of a milestone, with a variety of new connections made across Tennessee. Now, over one million citizens in the state of Tennessee have access to the service, with Bedford, Maury and Wayne Counties joining their counterparts in Crockett County, Nashville-Davidson County and the City of Brentwood in having access to the improved emergency response system.

Officials are recommending that citizens in those areas go to Smart911's website and create what's called a "Safety Profile". In the event of an emergency, the Safety Profile contains vital contact information that first responders receive whenever a 911 call is placed. The Safety Profile contains information like names and addresses, but also details about the address itself and the people who live there, among other things. It gives the first responders that extra bit of information which, in an emergency, may well make the difference between life and death by saving time and effort.

Naturally, putting that much personal information in one place prompts concerns about safety on the part of the vigilant, and with good reason. But in this case, the information is kept quite safe and made available only to dispatchers during an emergency call. Better yet, since Smart911 is a national network, the profile follows the user, so if a Tennessee resident should call 911 on vacation in another Smart911-supported locale, the profile is available to those dispatchers as well.

The director of Maury County's 911 service, Freddie Rich, described his county's reaction to the expanded service: "We've seen the success of Smart911 and the positive response from citizens in other areas of the state and country, so the decision to implement the service was easy. In addition to allowing our call takers to better assist citizens, a Safety Profile also gives response teams in the field improved situational awareness."

It's all about providing more information to those who need it, when it's needed most. Clearly that seems to be working with the Smart911 service, as evidenced by its rapid and continuing expansion. When seconds count in a crisis, having extra information on hand that may trim those seconds off a response is not only vital but deeply welcomed, so it's a safe bet that Smart911 will continue its outward expansion to reach more users.
