Dial 911 for NASA
By Julie Griffin, Contributing Writer
If you have an emergency while on Redstone Arsenal Army base in Huntsville, Alabama, dialing 911 will connect you to NASA. This isn’t just good news for Redstone Arsenal residents…
This is one small step for man, and one giant leap for mankind.
Residents of Redstone Arsenals are in close proximity to Marshall Space Flight Center, but before the opening of the newly unified 911dispatch center, the two locations depended on different response units. Not only did that cost extra time, but extra money as well.
According to the arsenal’s Col. John Hamilton, “We will save the taxpayers' money, around $1 million per year. We must never compromise on the quality of our performance on their behalf, but we must accomplish those outcomes at reasonable costs. With this joint center we have found much lower costs for a higher level of performance."
How is this a giant leap for residents in Atlanta who suffer from the longest average 911 response? This newly developed call center in NASA took collaborative efforts to produce. New concepts and better procedures are now in place, and since NASA is the headquarters for technological breakthroughs, you can probably rest assured it will be superior.
NASA, which owns many patents, encourages people to use their innovations to inspire others. Because of NASA, people have a better quality of life. And since NASA is already talking to other dispatch centers, hopefully the people in Atlanta won’t have to wait much longer.
