RedSky Introduces Next-Generation 9-1-1 Network Solutions

By John Lahtinen, Community Development Editor, TMCnet

RedSky Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of automated E911 solutions, today announced the launch of three new Next-Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) network solutions designed to help 9-1-1 authorities and Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) transition to the National Emergency Number Association’s (NENA) i3 standards-based architecture, which the organization’s Executive Board formally approved last week. The announcement was made today at the NENA 2011 Conference in Minneapolis.

According to RedSky (News - Alert), its new patented Location Information Server (LIS) is the key NG9-1-1 network element for receiving, storing and delivering the location data of any device used to dial 9-1-1 during an emergency. The company has also developed two Legacy Gateway (News - Alert) products, a Legacy Network Gateway (LNG) and a Legacy PSAP Gateway (LPG) to provide critical transitional capabilities to 9-1-1 authorities and PSAPs who are managing the migration toward NG9-1-1 in measured, incremental steps.

“RedSky’s new NG9-1-1 network solutions have been designed to help public safety, government and military customers quickly and cost effectively adopt i3 standards and embrace NG9-1-1,” said Jerry Eisner, ENP, RedSky’s Group Director of Public Safety, in a release. “These solutions will serve the majority of 9-1-1 authorities and PSAP operators for whom a one-step, fork-lift migration isn’t feasible.”

The RedSky LIS delivers NENA-standard data formats for fixed device service orders and obtains and delivers real-time location information for devices such as mobile phones, smartphone and enterprise Wi-Fi phones that are constantly moving. The LIS supports NENA 2.1 and NENA 4 Service Order inputs from service providers and supports NENA’s E2 interface over IP to communicate with legacy elements and determine the location of network-connected devices, according to the release.

RedSky’s new LNG provides the on-ramp for emergency calls from the public switched telephone network from both SS7 and CAMA trunks by translating them into SIP-based signals that can be routed over secure, private IP-based networks for handling by the appropriate emergency entity.

Delivering IP-based emergency calls to the vast majority of PSAPs using traditional CPE is handled by RedSky’s new LPG, which translates an IP call into traditional CAMA signaling for handling, making it possible for PSAPs to gain the benefits of IP-based networks without upgrading CPE.

All three of RedSky’s new NG9-1-1 network solutions completed NENA’s NG9-1-1 interoperability testing as part of the company’s active participation in the i3 standards development process.
