Does the United States Need Federal E911 Legislation? For those of us who need a refresher on our Constitutional law, the Tenth Amendment to the US Constitution states that any powers not granted to the federal government are the purview of state governments. In a lot of cases, this provision works well, as states can set their own speed limits, for example, or make their own decisions on statewide standardized testing for grade school students. But sometimes, when there is an issue of public health and safety in the balance, it's better to create a federal law that supersedes the various laws that hold sway in each state. This especially holds true in the case of enhanced 911 legislation.

Vermont Launches First Statewide Text-to-911 Trial for Emergency Help As part of a six-month trial to test the potential of text-to-911 technology, Verizon Wireless customers can send a text message to 911 for emergency help from locations in Vermont. From now until October 15, 2012, the Williston Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) will accept 911 text messages from Verizon Wireless customers, said Verizon. The text-to-911 technology is the result of collaboration between the Vermont Enhanced 911 Board, Verizon Wireless and Intrado, a Colorado-based emergency communications technology provider.

New York City Launches $680 Million E911 Call Center More than 10 years after the horrific events of Sept. 11, New York City's 911 operators are now about to provide callers with specifics about emergency events. The changes are in response to what the Sept. 11 Commission determined were flaws in the city's E911 system, according to the Associated Press. The commission found that the city's emergency response system failed to give "potentially lifesaving information" to people trapped inside the burning World Trade Center, which ended up collapsing, killing more than 2,750 people in the attack on the Twin Towers.

A Growing Smartphone Crowd Sparks Need for E911 Apps As mobile consumers, we are enamored with apps. We want multiple apps for music, connecting with friends, managing photos and more. Kimball has been selected by the State of California to implement Next Generation 911 for its 911 Emergency Communications Division. FCC Report Calls for Amped-Up Communications Monitoring In the not too distance future, the Federal Communications Commission expects to dramatically increase Internet-monitoring services in the name of maintaining national security.
