911 ETC Provides Hosted Emergency Location Information for World Vision

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

In this day and age of communicating with each other by anything other than a landline, it can be difficult for emergency responders to know exactly the location of an emergency called into a 9-1-1 center. As a result, the government has launched a focused effort to implement E911 solutions.

Humanitarian organization, World Vision, is dedicated to working with communities throughout the world to tackle the causes of poverty and injustice. World Vision company headquarters are located in Washington State and consist of three, multi-level buildings.

In the past, any outgoing 9-1-1 call placed within an office on the campus of the company headquarters had only the main billing address attached to it. As a result, those responding to an emergency had no way of knowing the exact location of the emergency.

In addition, on-site security was unaware of any 9-1-1 calls being placed. This placed significant risk on World Vision staff and campus guests and the company was determined to address the problem and implement a fully managed E9-1-1 solution.

World Vision turned to 911 ETC's hosted and fully managed service, which included assistance with initial implementation and ongoing monthly maintenance. Zone location reporting was available for each floor of every building on their campus and a LAN-Alert allowed the organization to avoid additional programming work in the switch and to provide their on-site security with local notification of 911 calls.

A data feed from World Vision's switch admin is taken by 911 ETC and includes each active station and its corresponding building code and floor number. 911 ETC is then able to assign the appropriate ELIN, which was previously loaded to the 911 ALI database and uploads the station table to LAN-Alert.

Today, 911 ETC is still providing World Vision with fully managed E911 service, including on-site notification to security personnel with the installation of LAN-Alert. Now, when a 911 call is placed from World Vision's campus, emergency responders know exactly where on campus the call was placed and the company's security team is immediately made aware of the call.

In addition, on-site security receives a screen pop with the extension and location information for the caller. The appropriate ELIN corresponding to the building address and floor information is then delivered to the Public Safety Answering Point so that help can be appropriately dispatched.
