Avaya Expands Next-Gen 911 Ready Solutions to Aid Public Safety Organizations

By Amy Tierney, TMCnet Web Editor

In an effort to help public safety organizations better meet the demands of new and emerging communications technologies being used more and more by the public, Avaya, a provider of business communications applications, systems and services, announced it has enhanced its Next-Generation 9-1-1-ready (NG 9-1-1) solutions.

The expanded solution is bringing together a team, including professional services consulting, technical capabilities, and developer partners to help deliver integrated solutions for public safety organizations, the company said.

A recent report from the National Emergency Number Association, or NENA, found that the nation’s 911 systems are “in need of a significant overhaul.” Public safety organizations face multiple challenges because of the highly-limited, legacy communications systems broadly used by more than 6,000 Public Safety Answering Points and 500,000 affiliate organizations, including police, fire, and EMS workers

Some of those challenges include the inability to incorporate and respond to new forms of media used by the public, such as video and SMS/text services, the ability to quickly add and redistribute staff to support high call volumes, and the lack of interoperability among communications systems.

Under Avaya (News - Alert) Professional Services, Avaya Aura and with help from development partners in the Avaya DevConnect (News - Alert) program,Avaya NG 911 Ready solutions help public safety organizations take a secure approach to updating technologies to solve a number of challenges with legacy systems, the company said.

Already, Avaya NG 911-ready solutions support a number of major urban areas, including Washington, D.C, Miami-Dade County in Florida, and Galveston County in Texas. In addition, the solution is also being used at large regional and state agencies, universities and small-to-mid size cities and counties across the U.S., the company said.

The technology can guide PSAPs as they update their communications systems. The Avaya Professional Services consulting offer includes an onsite assessment of a company’s or group’s technology, business policies and staffing skills, a forecast that identifies opportunities for technological and operational change ranked by complexity and impact and a solution design and roadmap that includes third-party applications and services outside the Avaya portfolio.

Avaya Aura has other applications beyond PSAPs. In the enterprise world, Everett, Wash.-based hosted solutions provider 911 ETC, for instance, provides a total E911 solution, remaining compatible with NG911 advances, such as the Aura platform, company officials said.

Avaya NG 911-ready solutions are available from Avaya channels including system integrators, service providers, prime contractors and value-added resellers. Further information is available here.
