Aculab Provides Support to New Emergency Number Standard

Aculab (News - Alert) today issued a statement congratulating the European Emergency Number Association (EENA) for releasing Next Generation 112 Long Term Definition into public consumption, a new standard for emergency service numbers.

Aculab had a hand in the development of Next Generation 112 Long Term Definition (also called NG112 LTD), a standard geared toward providing global interoperability, providing the GroomerII gateway as the primary protocol interface function. As such, many previous standards were reused in its development, including the i3 standard developed for the National Emergency Number Association, and the use of GroomerII allows for internetworking between SIP and SS7, allowing for better connectivity.

What differs about NG112 LTD is that it includes a lot more than the earlier standards, including things like support for voice calling, but also text messaging, video contact, and picture messaging. This allows for first responders to receive more information about a particular incident, and thus have a better idea of how to prepare for it before they even arrive on the scene.

NG112 LTD gets its official unveiling at next week's EENA EU Emergency Services Workshop event in Riga. Emergency service workers will be in attendance and Aculab will have a booth at the event to show off its other services.

Improvements in emergency number management are a good idea not only for users but for providers as well. With emergency services able to plan for an incident even before arrival, the chances of successful completion of an emergency event climb accordingly. When an emergency event is successfully completed, then the person who called in the emergency event -- who is also likely the victim of whatever happened to trigger an emergency in the first place -- also comes out ahead.

Thus, improvement of emergency number services, to allow for more information to freely flow between the user and the emergency responders, is a move that everyone can get behind and provides benefits for everyone involved. Aculab's work in developing NG112 LTD is likely to only be helpful on that front.
