Comcast to Keep TWC Call Center Jobs in New York

Comcast to Keep TWC Call Center Jobs in New York

When two large national organizations with millions of customers merge, it usually means there will be many jobs that will be axed as a cost-cutting measure. This unfortunately means the company doing the acquisition will get rid of positions that perform the same functions, but there are cases in which these jobs cannot be eliminated because of the service they provide to customers. Lucky for the hundreds of Time Warner Cable call center staff in Western New York, Comcast (News - Alert) will be keeping everyone in order to ensure its new customers continue to have access to the call center.

Comcast made a stock-for-stock transaction in which it will acquire 100 percent of Time Warner (News - Alert) Cable's 284.9 million shares outstanding for shares of CMCSA, amounting to approximately $45.2 billion in equity value.

The merger agreement is subject to shareholder approval and regulatory review, and is expected to close by the end of 2014. When it is finalized Comcast will acquire close to 11 million Time Warner Cable managed subscribers, but it is going to divest service to approximately three million managed subscribers to reduce competitive concerns, leaving it a net gain of around 8 million customers and total of 30 million nationally, or close to 30 percent of the total number of MVPD subscribers in the U.S.

According to statements released by U.S. Senator Charles Schumer (D.-NY), he has received assurances from Comcast personnel that the call center in Western New York will continue to operate as well as moving forward with a new center in Buffalo, which was announced last summer.

The new complex will convert the old Sheehan Memorial Hospital into a 50,000-square-foot space for Time Warner's -- and now Comcast's -- East Coast Business Class Services hub. The center is expected to employ 300 new workers and create an additional 150 new jobs in the next five years.

"In light of the news of this potential merger, my biggest priority is ensuring that Comcast preserves Time Warner Cable jobs in Buffalo and all of New York,” Sen. Schumer said. “After speaking with Mr. Cohen, a top Comcast executive, I am very pleased with the news that Comcast is fully committed to following through on previous commitments to jobs, particularly the job additions coming to Buffalo at Compass (News - Alert) East.”
