-Mobile, Miami-Dade County Schools, Strike Wireless Communications Provider Deal

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Fresh out of Miami, news has been released that the Miami-Dade County Public School District has chosen T-Mobile (News - Alert) as its primary wireless communications provider. Specifically, the district purchased both BlackBerry (News - Alert) Curve 9300 smartphones and BlackBerry Bold 9780 smartphones to be used by district administrators and principals. School district officials announced they also bought Samsung (News - Alert) B2710 “ruggedized” phones for use by custodial and field staff.

“With the unprecedented economic strain that school districts are facing across the country, we can provide the Miami-Dade Public School District with a nationwide mobile network while reducing the associated costs to the district,” said Gabriel Torres, vice president and general manager, Florida region, T-Mobile USA, who explained that by using dedicated Cells on Wheels (COWs, one of the better acronyms out there) across the district, “we have provided administrators with the ability to stay connected in the event of a natural disaster or emergency.”

Earlier this month, TMCnet reported that the proposed AT&T (News - Alert) purchase of T-Mobile USA “will increase market concentration, reduce consumer choice, and open the door for price increases in the most heavily populated U.S. wireless markets,” said by Gigi Wang, Yankee Group chief research officer, and Carl Howe, Yankee Group director.”

That was not Yankee Group’s position in March 2011 when the transaction was proposed, Kim noted: “The change of view appears to be driven by further analysis of Yankee Group data, which leads the Yankee Group analysts to ‘dash cold water on the merger’s promise of benefiting consumers and competition’.”

Miami-Dade County Public School District is the fourth largest in the country, with 2,000 square miles of both urban and rural cities, 392 schools, 345,000 students and over 40,000 employees.

In May of this year, T-Mobile doubled the theoretical peak download speed of its 4G network to 42 Mbps in the Miami area, and since the beginning of 2010, T-Mobile officials say the company has invested approximately $37 million in continuous network upgrades and improvements in Miami, and now has more than 308 cell sites operating 4G service in the area.

The 4GWE Conference provides unmatched networking opportunities and a robust conference program representing the wireless ecosystem. The conference not only brings together the best and brightest in the wireless industry, it actually spans the communications and technology industry. To register, click here.
