Communication Provider Cox Introduces 'Unbelievably Fair' Phone, Internet Service in Virginia Markets

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Cox (News - Alert) Communications, a communications provider today officially introduced its "unbelievably fair" mobile phone and high-speed Internet service in Roanoke and Northern Virginia, completing Cox's rollout of wireless service in Virginia.

By the end of this year, Cox Wireless will be available in more than 50 percent of its footprint, including San Diego and Santa Barbara, California, Topeka and Wichita, Kansas and much of Northwest Arkansas.

Company officials say the addition of wireless to Cox's existing bundle of video, Internet and landline telephone services is intended to introduce what they call “greater ease in integrating home and mobile services,” adding that Cox provides ‘moneyback minutes’, or cash back on customers' bills for unused minutes each month, rather than losing the unused minutes or carrying them over month-to-month with no monetary benefit.

Earlier this month, TMCnet had the news that The Oklahoma City Economic Development Trust is weighing a $450,000 incentive package agreement with Cox TMI Wireless LLC. in order to seal a deal for the company to open a 218-employee call center.

The incentive, still to be negotiated, would be in exchange for the new wireless provider, part of Cox Communications, hiring 218 people over the next three years, to be earning an average salary of $36,000.

Kristin Peck, vice president of government and public affairs for Cox, told the trust the company has been rolling out the wireless phone service over the past several months and is now operating in California, Virginia, Nebraska and Oklahoma.

The company currently is handling service through its call center at NW 122 and Pennsylvania Avenue, but entertained offers to open operations in several states, Peck said. Peck told the trust Cox chose Oklahoma City because of its good business climate, workforce and availability of incentives.
