KDDI (News - Alert) Corporation, a provider of telecommunications services to global companies, announced it is working to upgrade its existing cable route between Asia and Europe.
Russia-Japan Cable Network (RJCN) to offer the fastest route possible.
The project includes the upgrade and modernization of RJCN to enable it to provide 10G wavelength services, company officials said. With this upgrade, the cable takes the shortest possible route between Tokyo and London, so it reduces the round-trip delay dramatically compared to routes via the Indian Ocean and the United States, company officials said.
As part of this project, KDDI will upgrade its RJCN up to 640Gbps with respective capacity on Russian carrier Rostelecom's (News - Alert) and KDDI's backbone. The project is expected to complete in the first quarter of 2012.
Earlier in April, KDDI formed an agreement with Rostelecom for the upgrade and modification of the RJCN and Transit Europe-Asia (TEA) cable.
According to Nobu Ogata, director of product development at KDDI America, “The combined investment from KDDI and Rostelecom in this project is substantial, more than $60 million, reflecting the importance of this route through Russia.”
Ogata expects that the traffic between Japan and Europe is expected to grow significantly between 2012-14, which will fuel the need for cost-effective 10Gbps wavelengths.
Recently KDDI America and Telehouse America, U.S. divisions of KDDI Corporation, announced the latest data center addition, Telehouse Hong Kong CCC (Cloud Computing Complex) scheduled for operation in December this year.
