Colocation Companies Embrace Expansion

By Carrie Schmelkin, TMCnet Web Editor

The trend of colocation centers expanding their facilities has held strong throughout May as Interxion (News - Alert), a leading European provider of carrier-neutral colocation data center services, recently completed the upgrade and expansion of its DUS1 data center.

A number of current and new customers have already taken advantage of this new expansion by completing deployments that are now live. These customers include freenet Datenkommunikations GmbH, GasLINE, Interoute Germany GmbH, KPN International, Telefónica Germany, Unitymedia and Vodafone (News - Alert) Group Services GmbH. The expansion and upgrade of the facility is in response to consistently rising demand from customers in the digital media, carrier and enterprise sectors, according to company officials.

Interxion’s Düsseldorf data center distinguishes itself as being in the Düsseldorf metropolitan area that houses the two most important regional Internet Exchanges, DE-CIX (News - Alert) Düsseldorf and ECIX. Moreover, the data center also gives direct access to more than 50 networks of carriers, ISPs and CDNs, providing ideal conditions for all companies relying on seamless connectivity and optimum network latency.

“Our Düsseldorf data centre combines state-of-the-art infrastructure with outstanding connectivity and provides the ideal environment for existing and prospective customers demanding robust infrastructure and optimum connectivity,” said Peter Knapp, managing director of Interxion Germany, in a statement.

Interxion’s latest expansion plans will allow for an additional 500 sqm of equipped space as well as a significant upgrade of the existing power and air conditioning infrastructure of both the current and new build-out phase of the data center. The total grid power available at DUS1 is above 20 MVA, enabling the site to support high-density power deployment configurations, a key requirement for the latest virtualized servers, according to company officials

Interxion’s Düsseledorf site also boasts the highest levels of redundancy, reliability and standards-based operation, with up to 2N UPS power and N+1 cooling, as well as advanced alarm and monitoring systems. The new space has been designed using Interxion’s energy-efficient modular architecture, with free cooling and maximum-efficiency components as standard.

Colocation expansion has hit the industry as recently companies like Telehouse America and CyrusOne (News - Alert).

This year, colocation leader Telehouse opened its third colocation facility at 85 10th Avenue in Manhattan’s Chelsea district. The carrier neutral data center, which opened on January 24, offers 60,000 square feet of colocation space on one floor with over 4mW of power. A few months later, Telehouse also announced the opening of its new data center in Istanbul, Turkey in partnership with local telecommunications/system integrator company Teknotel Telekomünikasyon.

Like Telehouse, colocation provider CyrusOne announced its plans to expand the number of data centers it operates and has recently started the process of constructing 92,000 square foot expansion to its Houston data center. The expansion is being built adjacent to the existing Houston center, and will add seven megawatts of power capacity, giving the site a total of 188,000 square feet of space with 15 megawatts of power. The space, which will be finished at the end of the third quarter of 2011, was “designed with customers in the oil and gas industries in mind,” according to company officials.
