Avere Systems, a data storage provider of hybrid cloud solutions, gives customers improved efficiency and lower costs.

“We work with people’s existing file base storage and we enable them to move on to object storage,” Rebecca Thompson, vice president of marketing at Avere, told TMC’s (News - Alert) Peter Bernstein at the Cloud Expo 2014.

The move could be for the private cloud or public cloud, and as an added bonus no changes are needed to someone’s application.

Avere has been in the market for about five years and has been involved in such sectors as media, entertainment, oil and gas, and life sciences.

A while ago, customers asked the company to help them find a way to move to the cloud. Their desire came from the economies of scale found with cloud storage and the price drop seen with Amazon Web Services (News - Alert) and Google. Avere came up with some options, and now customers can get flexibility and freedom and can put data “wherever they want,” Thompson said.

She points out that customers can get a 75 to 80 percent reduction in the cost of capacity by moving to object-based storage. In addition, she recommends that they take all of the data they are not using and move it to the cloud. On the other hand, they should keep their most active data on premise, because they need fast access to that. The data stored on the cloud is not needed as quickly or frequently.

Among Avere’s customers are Locaweb, which is South America’s largest web hosting service provider, and the Library of Congress, the largest library in the world, located in Washington, D.C. Both use Avere NAS Optimization technology. That lets them increase efficiency and performance, according to a company statement. They also find they will get lower costs and get quicker access to digital data through the technology.
