Private Clouds are Prevailing - is Your Cloud Management on Track?

Virtualization largely serves as an influencing factor in driving the popularity of private cloud usage. Companies that want total control of their cloud choose reliable, powerful cloud management to operate behind their own firewall, which allows IT to provision services on an as-needed basis, enables a completely managed environment, provides more efficient use of computing resources and ensures total control over software and hardware resources. 

While the private cloud acts very similarly to that of the public cloud – especially given the flexibility and scalability of the cloud – when it comes down to it, the private cloud offers better cloud management. In other words, they’ll have more control over the environment. In light of this, a recent InformationWeek report highlights why the private cloud is gaining such momentum. 

The key behind cloud management is virtualization. Some companies resisted virtualization because of its reputation as a risk, yet this concern over security has significantly faded, and private cloud adoption has ramped up as a result. A few years ago, there was a lot of talk about virtualization and security risks, much which was about the need for frequent patches to manage or ward off security threats. 

There was also the threat of malware spreading among virtual servers. The most prevalent fear was that the company’s confidential data would be compromised, but as better policies have been established, the process of virtualization and cloud adoption has become a safer, more compliant and overall more secure practice.

Howard Anderson digs deeper into this during his “interview” with InformationWeek CIO Stu Laura, where it is uncovered that the perception of those who prefer private clouds to public clouds are “control freaks.”

“I want my cloud right down the hall from me, right smack dab in the middle of my data center,” Laura insisted, and the public cloud simply can’t do that for you.

Working in a private cloud, companies don’t have to wait nearly as long to get new applications up and running. Addressing this speed issue, Laura asks rhetorically “do you know that in the past the big ate the small, but now the fast eat the slow?” 

The private cloud offers those core features available in the public cloud, including real-time access to consumption and the ability to activate a service in a matter of seconds, but yet it allows companies to bring complex solutions to life in less than a month from start to finish.

Laura typifies what a CIO looks for in cloud management by saying he doesn’t want to rely on a public cloud vendor such as Amazon because there is less accountability. “What am I going to do if Amazon has a problem?” he asks, pointing out that if he goes and screams at someone else to fix it, chances are he’s likely their lowest priority.

With a private cloud platform, however, he can work with heavyweights such as Cisco, Oracle, EMC (News - Alert), IBM or HP – companies that can provide the solutions that his company needs.
