AMD has announced the launch of five new 12- and 8-core members of the AMD Opteron 6100 Series processor family, namely 6132 HE of 2.2 GHz, 6140 of 2.6 GHz, 6166 HE of 1.8 GHz, 6176 of 2.3 GHz and 6180 SE of 2.5 GHz. The processors are available immediately and will satisfy the SMB requirements for low power balanced systems in addition to addressing the needs of enterprise and public sector environments for enhanced performance-per-dollar-per-watt.

In a release, Patrick Patla, vice president and general manager of server business at AMD (News - Alert) said that “These new server CPUs deliver greater performance than we've ever had before. When we launched the AMD Opteron 6000 Series platforms last year, we eliminated the '4P tax' and met market demands for higher performance-per-dollar-per-watt. Our customers' benchmarks and testimonials bear out these improvements, and these five new parts–and the rave review–prove that we continue to deliver on our vision.”

The new AMD Opteron SE processor provides enhanced performance in newly virtualized datacenters, financial services, databases and HPC environments, whereas the two AMD Opteron HE processors are highly scalable and power-efficient systems ideal for use in cloud computing, web serving and virtualization workloads. These processors also offer the advantage of socket compatibility with the AMD Opteron 6000 Series platform similar to that of AMD's forthcoming 16-core ‘Bulldozer’-based Opteron processors. The AMD Opteron 6000 Series platform based servers deliver excellent value, performance and energy efficiency that surpass Intel (News - Alert) Xeon processor-based servers on a multitude of important server benchmarks.

The new AMD Opteron 6000 Series platform-based systems powered by AMD Opteron processors have already been launched by OEMs and system builders including Acer (News - Alert), HP and Dell. The efficient architecture and scalability of the AMD Opteron 6000 Series platform has enabled the new Dell PowerEdge C6145 server to more than double its previous performance record for SPECfp_rate2006 performance in 2U servers. The AMD's server CPUs was acknowledged as the Best CPU of 2011 for parallel processing, in addition to the AMD Opteron powered Dell (News - Alert) PowerEdge R815 receiving the Silver Award for Server Hardware after being named as the 2010 Server of the Year.
