Cybercriminals are out there, looking for the best way to infect computers and steal valuable data, personal information, or even just cause distress. It’s a sad but true fact of the computer-centric world we live in. As such, it’s important to not only know what scams are out there, but how to best protect yourself against them.

While having an antivirus program is great for stopping, well, viruses, there are more ways to threaten a computer or entire system than just that.

For example, spear-phishing scams use fake e-mails to try to trick victims into giving away personal information. There are tens of thousands of phishing attacks each month, and they are good at slipping past spam and virus filters. As such, it’s not only important to have a solution that can better detect them, but also employee education on how to avoid such attacks.

There are also PC monitoring and keylogging tools, which are used to track activities. Malicious keyloggers can use these tools to grab passwords, personal information and user activity, which they can then use to their advantage.

Even our search engines might be at risk, with poisoned searches pushing fake and infected URLs to the top of search results. Those who click on them find themselves with viruses and malware, but fortunately, they tend to be targeted at popular searches, so unless your employees are looking up Internet porn or political conspiracy theories while at work, the risk there is slightly diminished.

Fortunately, there are ways to protect one’s computers and business. Not only is it vital to remain educated about what sort of threats are out there, but there are also programs designed to protect against even the sneakiest of attacks.

For example, GFI offers antivirus in the cloud, which provides IT administrators with real-time threat protection and control over network security. It can perform security scans without slowing down computers, while keeping sensitive data safely within the network. This helps not only save time for the IT department, but works automatically based on group policy, and has a Web-based dashboard that’s easy for IT administrators to use from a central point of control.

No matter what you use, network security is vital. There’s always someone who can make a profit at your expense by stealing personal or company information, and either would be a horrible loss. Remain vigilant and protected against these threats, because no cost is too great for the security that comes with good cyber-threat knowledge and protection.
