Even though cloud adoption is taking off at rapid speeds, many companies are still expressing reticence about fully making the jump to cloud because of security concerns. Fortunately those looking for secure cloud transitions need to look no further than CipherCloud, a company that touts itself for providing cloud security solutions that protect customer data using encryption.

“With the growth of the cloud and organizations adopting the cloud, it became clear that the next innovation was to allow people to enter the cloud securely,” Dev Ghoshal, senior vice president of field operations for CipherCloud, told TMCnet at Cloud Expo East 2012 yesterday. “We came up with a product that will allow organizations to adopt applications privately and publicly.”

“Fundamentally, our mission is to build trust in the cloud and trust in cloud applications and by doing so, really accelerate the adoption of cloud applications,” he added. “The key impediment is organizations that worry about their data in the cloud applications. What we do is we bring a very innovative software solution that takes care of these concerns.”

Founded in 2010 by a group of individuals who have extensive experience in cloud security and compliance – including a founder who started ArcSight (News - Alert) – CipherCloud is made up of a team that has a collective vision of eradicating the major deterrents for cloud adoption from data privacy to residency to security to compliance.

Over the past two years, CipherCloud has developed an award-winning solution that provides a single gateway as a platform to secure sensitive customer data across multiple public and private cloud applications, including Salesforce, Chatter, Gmail, and Amazon Web Services (News - Alert), without impacting functionality or performance.

While its first solution was for Salesforce, over the past few months the company has expanded its offerings to Amazon and most recently Gmail. Just this week at Cloud Expo, CipherCloud unveiled CipherCloud for Gmail, the industry’s first data-at-rest encryption solution for Gmail that addresses the challenges faced by organizations with data privacy and compliance requirements. The new solution provides additional security capabilities without affecting application performance or the end user experience, and it requires no changes to the application, according to company officials.

“The Gmail announcement is very exciting,” Ghoshal said. “Online email is a huge market; there’s tremendous value in it – the innovation of the product, the cost benefits. We have many customers who want to embrace that, but they worry about data privacy because their email is very sensitive and their email has sensitive topics. We now provide them a solution for Gmail where they can adopt a Gmail solution but have that solution on premise.”

The key features and benefits of CipherCloud for Gmail include: AES 256 military-grade encryption to protect email communication by encrypting the email subject, body, and attachments on the way to Google’s (News - Alert) servers; all the Gmail functionality users expect while still enjoying full protection, with near-zero latency; “bullet-proof” security as CipherCloud provides protection against the top cloud threats identified by the Cloud Security Alliance (CSA), including account hijacking and data loss; and support for mobile as CipherCloud for Gmail works with mobile devices such as the iPhone (News - Alert) and iPad.

When asked how CipherCloud maintains its competitive edge each year, Ghoshal said it’s by continuing to expand its technology so it can be used for any cloud application and on any cloud model.

“We expand the breadth of our product offerings,” he said. “Also, because we are a security company, we keep adding more security capabilities into our offering. Not only do we have world-class encryption and key management, but we have added more security like malware detection, cloud audit and a host of others.”

“We provide that balanced responsibility where the organization is able to retain control of the data and the cloud provider also provides great security,” he added.
