AWS Taps Eucalyptus as Private Cloud Communications Ally

Amazon Web Services’ move to partner with Eucalyptus Systems (News - Alert) is one of the most savvy cloud communications alliances to take place thus far in 2012.

Amazon Web Services (News - Alert) teamed up with Eucalyptus Systems, a provider of on-premises infrastructure-as-a-service software (IaaS), to help its customers more efficiently migrate workloads between their existing data centers and AWS while working across both environments.

Instead of viewing Eucalyptus as a competitor, Amazon has made the company its collaborator. “Amazon appears to have decided that small and midsize companies and large enterprises building out private clouds should be its natural ally,” a recent Information Week article points out.

The partnership means that companies that develop their private clouds using Eucalyptus will have built-in compatibility across Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud services, including EC2 compute and S3 storage.

This kind of harmony is a benefit for companies that want to use the public cloud for websites and some types of customer service and other public-facing processing while maintaining a more guarded and managed set of cloud services in their own data center.

“Enterprises can now take advantage of a common set of APIs that work with both AWS and Eucalyptus, enabling the use of scripts and other management tools across both platforms without the need to rewrite or maintain environment-specific versions,” Terry Wise, director of Amazon Web Services Partner Ecosystem, said in a statement. “Additionally, customers can leverage their existing skills and knowledge of the AWS platform by using the same, familiar AWS SDKs and command line tools in their existing data centers.”

Eucalyptus is designed for enterprise use, and the software platform is suited for private or hybrid IaaS computing. Built as an open-source product, Eucalyptus supports the AWS cloud APIs, as well as all major virtualization platforms, including Xen, Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) and VMware vSphere, ESX and ESXi.

“The ability to develop against a common set of market-leading APIs, for both on-premise and cloud deployments, is a big benefit for our customers and software partners,” said Marten Mickos, CEO of Eucalyptus. “This agreement is going to accelerate our road map, and help us maintain our compatibility with AWS as both companies continue to innovate.”
