8x8 Jumps Two Spots on Infonetics Research's VoIP Service Leadership Scorecard

By Tracey E. Schelmetic, TMCnet Contributor

You may have noticed that in enterprises today, voice over IP (VoIP) telephony is fast gaining on traditional telephone service for a variety of reasons, including cost, flexibility, reliability and next-generation communications features. What you may also have noticed is that the business VoIP market is changing a bit.

VoIP solutions provider 8x8 (News - Alert) recently jumped from fourth place to second in Infonetics Research's latest North America Business VoIP Service Leadership Scorecard. According to Infonetics, it was a “photo finish” for second place with first-ranked company Comcast (News - Alert).

“Comcast’s nationwide push of its Business VoiceEdge service helped Comcast grow its installed base and maintain its #1 position in Infonetics’ hosted VoIP leadership scorecard for the second year in a row,” said Diane Myers, principal analyst for VoIP, UC and IMS at Infonetics Research (News - Alert). “8x8 follows right on the heels of Comcast, making a big leap this year thanks to improved financial stability, continued growth of its installed base and a focus on service enhancements.”

Infonetics attributed 8x8’s meteoric jump to near the top of the list to “improved financial stability, continued growth of its installed base and a focus on service enhancements.” For its part, 8x8 notes that it continued to hold the lead position in the high-growth unified communications as a service business suite market in Q4 2012, maintaining a market share lead of five percentage points over the second-place company.

8x8 business VoIP helps unite multiple offices under one phone system, which is very attractive to businesses that are distributing across the nation, or even across the world, more regularly. Users find better call management and more advanced features, often for less cost. These hosted VoIP services are particularly ideal for contact centers with distributed locations and even home-based agents, allowing unprecedented flexibility in their operations.

More and more companies are finding the benefits of hosted VoIP, according to 8x8’s chairman and CEO Bryan Martin (News - Alert) in a recent blog post.

“While it’s interesting to focus just on the carrier race, the larger story is that while business VoIP market penetration is still less than that of traditional carriers, it’s growing at a huge rate, and might well overtake non-hosted, non-VoIP systems sometime this decade,” he writes.
