UK Plans to Help Prisoners become Call Center Certified

By Monica Gleberman, Contributing Writer

The next time you speak to a representative at a call center you could be calling a UK prison. The Ministry of Justice announced that it’s going to begin developing call centers inside of prisons to help prisoners during their rehabilitation programs. The programs are designed to help the prisoners learn a trade, keep busy with employment, and help them to adjust to life outside of the walls when released.

Call centers are coveted jobs and prisoners that are lucky enough to get this work detail will learn the value of its skills. The RCCSP Professional Education Alliance, who announced it would be offering a three-day training program for residents interested in becoming certified, explained the importance of learning the call center trade saying employees learn “comprehensive skills and knowledge necessary to manage a small, midsize, new, or challenged center.”

Prisoners who speak English and have a call center background would be eligible to apply for one of RCCSP’s upcoming certification programs. The programs were designed to help train people looking to learn more about the business, transfer into a different call center department, or learn the skills necessary to be promoted.

A marketing email sent with brochure information from UrbanData confirmed the company’s plans to pursue employment within local prisons. “We are training prisoners to become qualified contact center operators. This gives them employment during their prison and prepares them for a more productive life when they return home,” the email said.

Prisoners who complete the program would have the opportunity to sign up for additional certification programs, as well as, apply for call center jobs when released.

Although UrbanData confirmed the information via email, the company has yet to release specific details such as which prisons will be used for the call center, how prisoners will be chosen to participate, how much it will cost, how long it will take, or even what companies will sign up. Regardless, the company says this program could really help businesses save money and help those incarcerated learn a lifelong trade.
