Ergonomic in the Month of June

By Ashley Caputo, TMCnet Web Editor

Having a job where you repeat the same motion all day can cause damaging effects on your health, such as in an office where you type on a keyboard, or in a factory where you operate machinery and press the same buttons all day. Standing in the wrong position all day and working with materials that are not ergonomic can cause many people to suffer from Muscular-skeletal Disorders (MSD), which affects muscles, tendons and nerves.

The public does not necessarily think that workers operating from sit-down work space face many long-term health risks. “What is so hard about sitting in a chair all day?” is a common question someone may ask if you are complaining about any office pains. However, these conditions are real and they come in the form of carpel tunnel, eye strains, neck and back pain.

June is National Safety month, a yearly observance to educate and influence behaviors of the leading causes of preventable injuries and deaths. This is the perfect time for organizations to increase their awareness on ergonomics in order to keep their employees safe from any medical problems in the future because all of these injuries are avoidable.

To highlight National Safety month, one such company that has decided to enhance its own products is BioFit, a provider of furniture for the workplace, and has taken the time out to encourage businesses to adopt an ergonomic campaign.

For the office, the top five ergonomic essentials include:

    1. Saddle Chair
    2. Ergonomic Keyboard
    3. Adjustable Monitor
    4. Ergonomic Software
    5. Sit to stand Desk

Its new product falls under the saddle chair. Although it is not exactly the same type of seating, BioFit’s chairs aims to control posture and the risks that are associated with ergonomic injuries, like MSD. A fully ergonomic chair should alleviate the long-term problems of sitting in a chair and should support freedom of movement, according to BioFit. The seating options include lumbar support, height adjustment and cushioned, adjustable arm rests and allows for even weight distribution, along with a five-legged pedestal base.

By enforcing an ergonomic makeover and incorporating these five types of materials into the office, businesses can help their employees avoid the fate they are destined to have if their health is not taken into account of their daily work operations. The first step to this process is education, and after that organizations can begin to take the necessary steps towards an ergonomic future.
