Ergonomics for Kids

By Ashley Caputo, TMCnet Web Editor

This generation has begun to feel the aches and pains after spending years working in an office for eight hours each day where they repetitiously type on a keyboard and stare at a computer screen. Most of the conditions people are suffering from at the latter part of their live are referred to as muscular-skeletal disorders (MSD) that affect muscles, tendons and nerves.

However, in a world transfixed on mobile devices like smartphones, tablets and now phablets, these conditions are no longer just affecting those who are working in an office, but also children as young as three-years-old. Think about the youngest child you have ever seen playing with an iPad or iTouch, and now think about how early on they are going to start feeling the pains associated with MSD.

In  an effort to help save children from facing this fate, companies have begun creating ergonomic products in wake of the electronic revolution that now serves as their main source of entertainment. Here are a few of the most recent innovations that have entered the market.

  • Microsoft (News - Alert) has designed a new controller for Xbox 360 with an upgraded ergonomic design, and since children begin playing with gaming consoles at such young ages this will hopefully offset pains associated with holding the traditional controller.
  • The Wingo case is one of the newest ergonomic creations for the e-reader, providing protection for a child’s Kindle while also focusing on comfort levels. The case has two grips, or “wings” as the company refers to them, that come out of each side so that the Kindle can rest in a child’s hand.
  • Gruv Gear, a designer of musical products, has created an inexpensive, ergonomic enhanced guitar for children that are designed to ease the chronic shoulder pains caused by wearing a heavy strap. Since a regular guitar is usually quite heavy for a child, this new design will allow them to continue their musical education at a young age without facing any back pains.

As the world begins to shift its focus to computers and mobile devices, it is imperative that manufacturers begin designing products for these young children or they will be facing increasing amounts of pain in the future. Although there has been some ergonomic breakthrough in the industry, it seems that with so many new devices being created each day, there is a lot of work still  to be done.
