Sit to Stand Workstations Offer Relief from Sedentary Office Life

By Chris DiMarco, TMCnet Managing Editor

Sitting around all day is par for the course in most office jobs, but the sedentary lifestyle that many of us “enjoy” has pretty negative effects on our overall health. Physicians have known that lack of exercise contributes to weight gain and health issues for some time, but until recently they were unaware just how bad sitting around all day is, even when you’re getting regular exercise.

According to the research, LDL cholesterol builds more rapidly in the blood stream and stays there longer when people sit for long periods of time, as opposed to standing. In addition to cholesterol issues, other research has shown that sitting for 6 or more hours a day makes you 40 percent likelier to die within 15 years than someone sits less than 3 hours a day.

While getting more exercise and sitting less are the first steps they’re not always possible when your agents are expected to combat the never ending tide of customer service inquiries. Ergonomics are an important part of the work environment, maximizing productivity by reducing the discomfort and fatigue associated with working long hours. But while ergonomically designed fixtures can help combat the evils of sitting at some level, probably the best answer to the issue are sit to stand work stations like those offered by interior concepts.

Interior concept’s “sit to stand” workstation provides both ergonomic support while sitting and the ability to raise the keyboard and monitor to standing so a rep can continue to work while reducing the amount of time they’re sitting down. This solves both the issue of productivity lost to discomfort as well as an increase promotion of the overall health of the rep.

“Our greatest strength is our ability to meet the varied needs of our customers, and provide each one with the exact furniture design that they need for their space, function, and budget,” said Interior Concept’s Marketing Manager Jennifer Way. “By customizing our furniture products in a timely and economical fashion, we are able to meet the ever changing needs of our customers.” That includes the increasing demand for office and call center environments that promote the health of workers.

Sitting is a way of life for most of us office-dwellers. Incorporating ergonomic furniture, including sit to stand workstations in your office layout can help counter act some of the negative effects that come with sitting all day.
