Canada's VoIP.ms Falls Victim to DDoS Cyber Attack

Cyber attacks have generally been on the rise over the last decade, but have never hit the levels of the post-pandemic era. Despite massive efforts to protect consumers from fraudulent activity, it appears that attackers are still hard at work.

Canada’s VoIP.ms, a provider of telephony services based out of Quebec, recently announced that it is currently dealing with a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), which has caused a number of issues for the company’s 80,000 global customers. The company first became aware of the attack last week, after realizing that numerous customers were having difficulties accessing the company’s website.

Today, representatives of the company took to twitter to provide customers with an update regarding the current status of the situation:

“All our resources are still working at stabilizing our website and voice servers due to the ongoing DDoS attacks. We understand the significance of the impact on our clients' operations and want to reassure you that all of our efforts are being put into recovering our service.”-VoIP.ms official Twitter account.

To those unfamiliar with DDoS, the attack works by overwhelming internet servers with an influx of activity from bots or various computer sources. This activity eventually becomes too much for the server to handle, leading to poor performance quality or outright service failure.

This attack yet again points out the necessity of enhanced security measures in the post-pandemic era of work. The global shift toward online activity is creating vulnerabilities for organizations that are inadequately prepared, which could potentially cause financial problems that exceed the costs of any cybersecurity solution. Business leaders should take any news of cyberattacks as a serious reminder of the potential consequences of falling behind on network protection.
