Australian Businesses Cite Data Integration as Biggest Distribution Challenge

By Kasey Schefflin-Emrich, TMCnet Contributing Writer

A new research report commissioned by business software solutions provider Epicor Software (News - Alert) reveals some of the biggest distribution challenges currently facing businesses in Australia.

Produced by IT research firm Telsyte, the report surveyed more than 300 IT and business decision-makers from Australian organizations with more than 20 employees and found that data integration was considered the biggest challenge affecting the capability of an organization as better data integration leads to better automation and decision making.

While nearly two-thirds of enterprises included in the report have some form of distribution process involving products or services, almost half said their existing distribution processes lack the software or enterprise resource planning system necessary to effectively manage them. Moreover more than 80 percent of organizations cited having at least some problem with product or service distribution.

“The time is right to explore automated distribution management options," Telsyte Senior Analyst Rodney Gedda said in a statement. "CIOs should take a close look at what types of products and services they are distributing and the potential for process improvement might be profound.”

In the survey, more than a half of CIOs in organizations with distribution processes expressed that they believe better distribution would increase revenue and optimize business processes. Over a fourth also cited reduced operating costs.

As highlighted by the report, distribution practices don't attract the same level of priority as high-profile business processes such as customer relationship management and mobile enablement. Luckily there are many opportunities for improvement.

In a statement, Epicor's General Manager of Asia Pacific operations Craig Charlton pointed out that while organizations are starting to focus on distribution as business models are evolving in areas like trade and manufacturing, they should consider adopting an advanced ERP system as it can result in numerous benefits.

Speaking of Australian businesses, a new business confidence survey by Roy Morgan Research has announced that business confidence among businesses in Australia has reached its highest level since January.
