More Companies Turning to Big Data to Help Make Critical Decisions

By Christopher Mohr, TMCnet Contributing Writer

With processing power, memory and storage becoming orders of magnitude cheaper than previous generations of technology, big data has become a more feasible option for companies.

It is no longer enough to use a relational database management system (RDMS) that generates the same old canned reports. Management wants more insight into the data to understand quickly what it means to them. This data can come from numerous sources like emails, chats and texts and will be far more informative than the old data entry form.

Suppose a forklift company offered both online support and a call center to assist customers had a problem with several units leaking hydraulic fluid. The typical data entry form might not have an option for hydraulic fluid leaks. It couldn’t possibly provide a list of options for every single thing that might go wrong with a forklift.

A big data solution that analyzed CSR (News - Alert) notes, emails from customers, chat support logs and so on would be able to lexically analyze content and warn about hydraulics as a possible problem. Recalls could be issued and the problem solved more quickly.

Rexam PLC, one of the world leaders in producing beverage cans, chose PROS Inc. to develop a big data solution for them that would improve sales effectiveness. Rexam faces several challenges including currency fluctuation, extreme competition and worldwide operations that make it necessary to process and analyze data more quickly.

PROS offers several solutions to improve sales effectiveness. One solution analyzes customer data to determine which ones help the bottom line the most. The customers that are the largest in volume aren’t necessarily the most profitable. Other solutions help sales reps focus on selling, improve negotiations and make the quoting process more efficient.

Cheaper technology has made it possible to analyze data in ways that weren’t feasible before. As fast as markets move, companies can no longer demand data to fit into a nice structure. Since data can come from all directions and numerous formats, big data solutions are best equipped to handle the chaos. They not only focus on what’s relevant, they also take care of much of the analytics too.
