WDR mediagroup Deploys Aspera's High-Speed Transfer and Automation Solutions

Germany based media service provider WDR mediagroup (WDRmg) has deployed a complete suite of high-speed transfer and automation solutions from Aspera (News - Alert), an IBM company.

The company was seeking to adopt an efficient way to manage its complex workflows for processing content from multiple file formats for content digitizing, archiving and delivery, and also marketing and advertising services. With this latest deployment, the media service provider expects to streamline complex workflows of large and diverse volumes of digital media assets, the most prevalent form of Big Data, according to company officials.

Markus Kreisel, managing director at WDRmg digital, said that with Aspera, they can now manage and control all processes centrally and automatically, resulting in much greater efficiencies.

WDRmg believes that its customers will benefit from the deployment of Aspera’s solutions, as the speeding up of  workflow and scaling of capacity will enable the company to process as well as upload nearly 80 percent more video content to video streaming platforms.

“Files are now picked up from the archive and automatically transcoded into the requested format without delay. Thanks to the Aspera solution, we are able to seamlessly supply content to video-on-demand platforms worldwide,” Kreisel said.

Meanwhile, the installation of Aspera Orchestrator at the center of workflow management has enabled the company to integrate its existing subsystems with efficient, predictable file processing and delivery pipelines. Company officials said that this gives them the advantage of complete control and transparency of the process.

Additionally, the high-speed Aspera transfer makes it possible for WDRmg to quickly and securely take in the material that is coming from the customers and then process and transcode it into required formats and distribute the resulting content to a variety of online streaming services.

“The power and flexibility of Aspera’s FASP technology enables media enterprises like WDRmg to shorten and automate their production cycles, preserve their existing infrastructure, and securely deliver high-resolution media files to partners worldwide at maximum speed, regardless of file size, transfer distance or network conditions,” said Arnd Kohrs, sales director at Aspera.

And, automatically, the completed projects, which are part of the integrated end-to-end workflow, are archived by IBM (News - Alert) Archive and Essence Manager (AREMA), a multi-format media management and archive application.

With the addition of Aspera faspex, WDRmg users can now collaborate, share and deliver large files company wide. Also, the real-time notification, logging and reporting capabilities of Aspera Console ensures full transparency and accountability along the entire process chain, company officials said.

WDRmg is expecting to see an improvement in performance and efficiency, which will enable it to “significantly” expand its capacity to supply high-quality content to 15 leading VoD platforms, which exposes the content to a much wider audience base.

Earlier in June, Spuul, a video streaming service for Indian films and TV shows, deployed Aspera to quickly upload high-definition video content to its streaming portal.
